The South Alabama Radio Club began with an informal fish fry meeting on July 29, 1995 when a group of amateurs got together to discuss ideas on starting an amateur radio club. The second meeting was a formal meeting on August 17, 1995. A set of bylaws was approved, a newsletter was started and a net preamble was written for the 2 meter net. The club’s first 2 meter net was a simplex net on 146.570 on August 3, 1995. The initial roll call had a total of nine members checking in from Andalusia, Opp and Red Level, Alabama along with Crestview, Florida. The net was 8 minutes long with one piece of traffic passed. Founding officers were: President: N4ZEZ-Bruce Talkington (SK), Vice President: WA4LR- Larry Richards (formerly N5EPQ), Treasurer: KC4WNF-Geraldine Atchison and Secretary: KF4BOR- Deborah Brown. Today, the SARC has more than two dozen members and we remain committed to promoting amateur radio in Covington County, Alabama. We are more than happy to help anyone interested in learning more about amateur radio including mentoring and assistance in getting licensed. Several of our members are ARRL VEs and we provide testing every month right after our meeting. Our meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 PM at the Covington County EOC Building on Hillcrest Drive in Andalusia, AL. The test session follows immediately after the meeting. We do have technical demonstrations from time to time to keep things interesting. We greatly appreciate the Covington County Emergency Management Agency for allowing us the use of the EOC. We hold a weekly net on the WC4M Repeater (147.260+ / PL-100) every Thursday evening at 7:00 PM. We pass any necessary traffic and take comments and announcements as well as a buy, sell and trade session. The net is also held on the W4WEA Repeater (146.640- /PL-123) at least once a month. The Net schedule page will list the Net Controller and repeater to be used.
